How to choose the best therapist for me?
What or who, precisely, would be a good fit for me and could support me in addressing the issues that I am facing?
“When the student is ready, the Master will appear” is a familiar and overused quote we hear all the time, especially in martial arts/ action movies. If we stretch this quote into the field of mental wellness, how would it look like? Perhaps the modern equivalent is “When you are ready for growth/change, your therapist will know how to meet you halfway”.
Firstly, wanting professional help with your mental wellness is a sign of good self-awareness. Even the best martial artist will only grow when he/she knows that outside help is needed to better the skills.
Secondly, knowing what are your strengths and what areas you need to enhance makes the growth much easier. An effective therapist is a person who can understand your strengths and work with you to enhance the growth areas to reach your desired outcomes. If your therapist force fit you into just ‘one way’ of therapy without utilizing your strengths-it is time to move on and find a new therapist.
